| THE ONTARIO LAWYERS’ ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
The Glass Ceiling
Sandy, the firm's only black lawyer, mused about her career. A top student, she had been offered, not sought this position. Her work was mundane, even non-thinking, routine kind of assignments. But she worked hard and spent many hours hoping for more responsibility or challenging files that seemed to pass her by. It would be easy to label it systemic racism but she would not go there. Her finances were strained with a low salary, education debts and the cost of trying to keep up with expectations of being a “lawyer”. She saw a glass ceiling perhaps because of her gender, perhaps the colour of her skin, perhaps the opportunities that did not exist. She did not know what to do or who to talk to.
The Ontario Lawyers' Assistance Program provides help and someone to talk with. Do not hesitate to call.
