| THE ONTARIO LAWYERS’ ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
Keeping the Profession in Top Shape to Help the Public
Lawyers perform acts of public service for the general good of society giving time and expertise on boards and committees as well as performing pro bono work for those who otherwise might not have access to justice.
But what happens when the pressures of practice and the good work outside of practice have lawyers feeling stressed and burned out? What happens when the human equation of trying to balance family, practice and volunteerism feels overwhelming? What happens when the problem solvers have problems themselves?
OLAP has a corps of volunteer peer support lawyers who are willing to listen and who appreciate those special circumstances of being a lawyer. They are other lawyers who understand why and how we give back to the community. They offer their time to help keep the profession in top shape so that the helpers have a place to get help themselves. They listen, listen some more and then listen some more. And they care!
The power of speaking to another lawyer about personal issues is so powerful that assistance programs are thriving across Canada and the United States. Having someone to talk to is just a phone call away.
Congratulations to all lawyers who selflessly donate their time and expertise. Thank you to all OLAP volunteers who support the profession in giving of their sensitivity, time and compassion
