Balancing the demands of work and family is an ongoing challenge. If you’re looking for daycare, dealing with family transitions or caring for an older relative, the juggling act can feel overwhelming. Family Matters is here to help.

What’s behind the door to Family Matters?
Family Matters offers one-on-one consultation over the telephone. You’ll receive relevant information, resource referrals and educational materials customized to your specific family situation.

How can Family Matters help?
Family Matters’ Dependant Care Consultants are specialists in assessing, identifying and locating caregiving services to suit your needs. They will do research on provider locations, current availability, fees, and give you options on:

  • Parenting classes
  • Daycare centres and after-school programs
  • Schools, educational services and special needs programs
  • Adoption and multiple birth services
  • Seniors’ accommodations/nursing homes
  • Caregiver support groups
  • Rehabilitation and home support programs
  • Companion and elder care programs
  • Palliative care
  • Outreach and transportation services

You can also request a targeted resource kit or receive a personalized care package complete with a selection of Family Matters educational articles. Article topics include:

  • Maternity/parental leaves
  • Parenting effectively at all ages and stages
  • Talking to kids about divorce, peer pressure, drugs, etc.
  • Building strong blended families
  • Talking to older parents about their changing needs
  • Balancing work and home
  • Other family-related topics

While fees for referred services are your responsibility, many may be covered by your provincial or organization’s health plan. Family Matters saves you time and trouble so you can make the best decision for what matters most.

Legal concerns can drain you of precious time, money and energy. They can also cause stress and impact your family, work and life. Take the first step toward resolving your legal issue by getting expert, confidential consultation from Law Matters.

What’s behind the door to Law Matters?
Law Matters is a professional legal consultation service that offers access to qualified lawyers. You’ll receive a clear explanation of how the law applies to your specific situation and a recommendation on the most appropriate course of action. Law Matters is available Monday to Friday during normal business hours. If you are arrested or involved in an accident in which you are asked to make a legal statement, you may access Law Matters for emergency service 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

How can Law Matters help?
Consultation services are available on a variety of issues including:

  • Family law
  • Separation and divorce
  • Custody and child support
  • Bankruptcy
  • Wills and estate planning
  • Landlord and tenant issues
  • Summons, warrants and subpoenas
  • Consumer protection

Referral services provide easy access to additional help. If your legal issue requires assistance beyond the scope of Law Matters’ consultation service (e.g., preparation of a will or representation in court), Law Matters will help by providing a referral to a qualified lawyer or law firm. You will be responsible for fees incurred if you choose to accept representation from a referred legal service, however you will receive a preferred rate.

Law Matters offers information and consultation on most legal issues. Exceptions include: consultation on work-related issues, second opinions on another lawyer’s work, and legal guidance for a third party.

What’s behind the door to Money Matters?
Money Matters is a telephone consultation service that puts you in touch with skilled financial advisors who can help you create an action plan to deal with your specific financial issue. All consultations with financial professionals are strictly confidential. Should you need more extensive services, such as personalized financial planning, Money Matters can refer you to a qualified professional best suited to address your specific needs. Fees for services provided by other referred professionals are your
responsibility.

How can Money Matters help?
Money Matters can help you gain the valuable insight and information you need to face your financial challenges. The program covers issues such as:

  • Credit/debt management
  • Budgeting
  • Bankruptcy
  • Financial aspects of separation/divorce
  • Financial emergencies
  • Income tax planning
  • Early retirement

NUTRITION MATTERS

Need to boost your energy levels?

Are your eating habits out of control?

Is coffee and a doughnut a balanced diet to you?

Your food choices have a huge impact on your mood, health and energy levels. But maintaining a healthy, well-balanced diet can be a challenge with a hectic schedule and multiple family demands. Fortunately, Nutrition Matters can help you achieve your
nutritional goals.

What’s behind the door to Nutrition Matters?
Nutrition Matters is a professional nutritional consultation service that can help you make positive changes to your diet and lifestyle. A Registered Dietitian will assess your eating habits, identify dietary concerns and answer any questions you may have.

How can Nutrition Matters help?
You can receive help from Registered Dietitians on a variety of concerns including:

  • Weight loss/gain
  • Getting off the diet ‘roller coaster’
  • Boosting energy and stress resilience
  • Healthy eating on the go
  • Accommodating shift work
  • Eating a well-balanced vegetarian diet
  • Lowering cholesterol levels
  • Reducing high blood pressure
  • Regulating diabetes
  • Preventing heart disease
  • Preventing osteoporosis

You’ll receive three hours of consultation from a Registered Dietitian to help you create and follow a personalized nutrition program. During the first consultation, your Dietician will provide an assessment, review your eating habits and discuss your goals. Together, you’ll create a healthy eating program that targets your individual needs and suits your lifestyle. Subsequent consultations with your Dietician can address any questions you may have and support you in achieving your goals. You will also be provided with printed educational materials to help you along the path to healthier eating habits.

Need home care answers, not more questions?

Whether you are caring for a spouse, parent, relative or neighbour, you can have the support and help you need to reduce anxieties and stress. Talking one-on-one with a home care professional can improve the quality of life for you and your loved one.

What’s behind the door to HomeCare Access?
HomeCare Access links you to a network of qualified, on-call healthcare and home care professionals. Whether you’re looking for a last minute solution to a home care emergency or planning long-term care, you can get the guidance you need quickly and conveniently.
HomeCare Access gives you quick and easy access to a range of services including:

  • Professional nursing for general medical care
  • Post-operative, postpartum or palliative care options
  • Care for loved ones affected by stroke, Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia
  • Help with housekeeping, shopping, meal preparation, personal care or grooming for older or special needs individuals
  • Companions for recovering patients
  • Rehabilitation services such as physiotherapy, speech and occupational therapy

How can HomeCare Access help?
The professionals at HomeCare Access will assess your unique situation. You’ll receive a recommended action plan that includes suggestions on the most suitable services available. You can also take advantage of HomeCare Access’ network of skilled healthcare and home care professionals who are available to help in your home with daily activities or more complex medical care.

If you engage the services of a HomeCare Access professional or a referred service, you will be responsible for any costs, however some services may be covered by your provincial or organization’s health plan.
